Call to Action and The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests join together in witnessing for women at the time of the Diocesan Chrism Mass. Bring your signs, bring your friends. Let us express the hope that the new Pope will respond to women’s voices.

This Mass is a very public gathering of clergy and/or their representatives from around the diocese to witness the blessing of the holy oils by the bishop. The oils are then brought back to each parish for sacramental use throughout the year. Indeed, the timing of this ceremony makes the oils available for the initiation of new members of the church during the Easter Vigil.

In more recent history this ceremony has taken on an added significance for the clergy of the Catholic Church. While gathering joyfully in one place clergy are able to renew their promises to the bishop similar to the annual renewal of vows practiced by many religious communities. In fact, in the eyes of many this has become the primary focus of the Chrism Mass.

As a celebration of the ordained, this occasion is a sharp reminder to those left out that ordination is not offered to women in the Catholic Church. The Chrism Mass has become an instrument of celebrating and maintaining the patriarchal structures of the institutional church and is a symbolic reminder that women’s voices are not heard on numerous issues affecting Catholic women faithful and women in general.

In order to state these issues more publicly CTA members stand in unity with Fr. Roy Bourgeois and Roman Catholic Women Priests and provide a witness outside the Cathedral at the time of the Chrism Mass in numerous dioceses. bourgeois
The Witness for Women will take place in Albany on Thursday evening March 21, 2013 at 6:00pm till 7:00pm in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. All CTA members and friends are invited to participate.
